Another packed meeting room last night. Our guest speaker was Teresa Roane, current Archivist at the UDC headquarters and previous archivist at the Museum of the Confederacy. She is a treasure trove of knowledge and a joy to hear speak.

Her talk last night was on “Soldiers, Civilians, and Children, Christmas in the South” She read several moving letters that wartime soldiers had written home telling about their Christmas experiences. She finished on a fun note by reading everyone’s favorite “A Confederate Night Before Christmas”. Thank you Teresa Roane for coming and providing us such an enjoyable evening.

November 30, 2025 PETERSBURG BATTLEFIELDS TOUR

One of the benefits of joining the SCV is the opportunity to meet and network with LOCAL historians. These are people who have extensively studied first-hand records in a specific area.

This past Friday a small group of us traveled to Petersburg and experienced a private tour of Petersburg battlefields. Mark Jacobsen, a board member of the Petersburg Battlefield Foundation, was our tour guide. His area of focus for us were the Battles of Weldon Railroad and of Reams Station. Mark gave us green folders containing comprehensive maps that displayed troop locations throughout different times of the day. As we were walking the actual battlefields and seeing the earthworks, he read for us first-hand accounts from soldier’s diaries and letters. We gained a new appreciation of the hardships our ancestors experienced. A very enjoyable tour.
